This project involves the revitalization of an older industrial facility. Positioned within the M60 Cultural and Creative Park in Kunming, Yunnan, it previously served as the Kunming Battery Factory during the 1980s. In line with urban renewal initiatives, the former industrial site has been transformed into a vibrant mixed-use creative hub, blending consumer activities with office spaces. The expansive workshops of the original structure have been segmented into distinct spatial units, now leased to various retailers and small-scale enterprises.
The 12-meter-tall factory building preserves fundamental industrial architecture features: robust columnar supports and delicate steel frames that bear the weight of the delicate pitched roof. Upon the departure of the previous owners, the interior was repainted white, concealing most of the industrial traces, resulting in a vast interior space.
Having long dreamt of running a bookstore, the owner sought out this distinctive venue with the
vision of transforming it into a cultural hub where individuals can immerse in quiet reading or gather for vibrant discussions and sharing sessions.
The unique large space like this is becoming increasingly rare in urban areas. Our aspiration is that the fresh renovation plan preserves the inherent attributes of the original factory building to the maximum extent possible, while also satisfying the requirements for book display, conference and meeting arrangements, catering events, casual reading, and other such functionalities.
We have designed a "monumental bookshelf" utilizing an entire wall of the factory premises, thereby making it the focal point of the space. Additionally, we have meticulously planned the circulation paths within the premises, ensuring seamless navigation between the multi-tiered bookshelves and various functional zones. This allows users to freely roam around the factory premises and immerse in the unique atmosphere created by the interplay of light and space within the old factory premises.
In this project, the traffic flow is a crucial element of the design.
Firstly, the workshop space is situated in the middle-to-rear section of two parallel roads in the campus, with no connecting passage between them. We aspire to transform our space into a "corridor" that links the two park roads, thereby fostering regional interaction within the park and inviting more visitors into the interior of our project space.
Secondly, we've designed a soaring bookshelf wall utilizing the tallest wall in the space, and crafted four tiers of aisles in front of the book wall. This design enables people to effortlessly reach the books, and as they ascend to access higher shelves, they gradually discover the higher spaces within the workshop, gaining a panoramic view of the entire interior.
Lastly, the traffic routes connected to each tier of bookshelf aisles guide guests to our newly arranged rest areas situated at various elevations within the workshop interior.
In the design process, we aim to preserve the original high ceiling of the old factory premises while introducing new spaces without compromising the existing architectural elements and structural components. Furthermore, we strive for the newly integrated spaces to establish a dynamic interplay with the existing structure, resulting in two separate yet interdependent and symbiotic new spaces.
Today, as urbanization slows, the renovation and renewal of old buildings has become a critical design topic. We must transform these spaces to meet contemporary commercial demands. Additionally, for historically significant areas, it is essential to preserve their original architectural features and effectively communicate the building's historical narrative. This consideration is vital in our design approach.
